memorization and its role in education

Hi,


I know this has been discussed a few times here in the scope of other discussions but wanted to give it its own thread.
So much of what we were given to learn as kids was, memorize this list of facts, or these dates, or these math postulates, etc. The educational move away from this has been mainly a good thing, but have we thrown the baby out with the bath water? I like that kids are being taught how to think and how to problem solve, but are some things just easier to memorize?
